Job Purpose:
The role
- Act as a key local PX procurement resource from BPZ, assist PX China Commercial Manager to interact both internally and externally to achieve smooth execution of the China PX term contracts.
- Assist PX China Commercial Manager and participate in commercial negotiation of China PX term contracts with external suppliers in China.
- Support PX China Commercial Manager in implementing both China sourcing short term tactics and long term sourcing strategy.
- Support PX China Commercial Manager in China Contract Price development and management.
Reporting Relationships:
This position is based in Zhuhai and reports to PX China Commercial Manager, Sales Marketing, Supply Logistic, Aromatics Asia.
Job Dimensions:
BP is the world's leading producer of Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA)- a key raw material for the manufacture of polyester and PET bottles. About three-quarters of the world's PTA demand is in Asia, with a consistent growth rate of 8% annually over the past decade.
The Aromatics Asia & Europe Business Unit has its headquarters in Hong Kong. Its Asian PTA operations consist of a wholly-owned plant in Malaysia and joint venture operations in Taiwan, Indonesia and China, totaling 4.6 million tons capacity. While BP is also a leading PX producer in the world, a raw material of making PTA, we are one of the largest PX buyers in Asia including requirements from joint ventures. SMSL Aromatics Asia is responsible for PX supply, PTA sales and marketing and the related logistics and shipping operations in Asia. Its sales revenues and procurement spends combined are around 4 billion USD per year.

Accountabilities:
1. External interfacing for China PX procurement, operation and commercial negotiation:
? Act as a focal point in BPZ, establish close commercial and other liaison relationship with external China local PX suppliers.
? Complete and execute PX supply contracts according to established tactics.
? Participate in long term PX supply contract negotiations with external PX suppliers in China.
? Participate in capturing spot purchase opportunity in China when necessary.
2. Internal interfacing for China and Asia PX supply contract execution:
? Act as a key internal focal point in BPZ, coordinate with other internal commercial and accounting teams in BPZ to achieve smooth China PX contract execution and payment flexibilities.
? Coordinate with HK operation team to achieve smooth PX delivery without feedstock interruption.
? Assist PX Asia Commercial Manager on commercial and administrative completion of renewals of existing Asia PX supply agreements and new supply contracts.
3. Analysis on short term China PX sourcing tactics and long term sourcing strategy.
? Assist PX China Commercial Manager to develop and identify short term China sourcing options.
? Assist PX China Commercial Manager and PX Asia Commercial Manager to optimize the Asia overall PX procurement cost and manage PX supply stability to BPZ.
Person Specification
Experience:
- Minimum 5 years of work experience preferred in refining or chemical industry
- Previous experience in procurement, supply chain, or other commercial roles
- Previous experience of developing and enhancing good relationship with external counterparties
- Previous experience in business analysis or strategy role advantageous
- Good interpersonal and negotiation skills
- Strong internal and external relationship building skills
- Ability to communicate clearly and accurately to different audiences both internally and externally, and able to manage and resolve conflict constructively.
- Builds effective external relationships
- Ability to follow through tactics and plans
- Understands dynamic China business environment
- Good analytical skills and business judgment in a complex environment
- Good knowledge and skill of Excel and Powerpoint |

BP Zhuhai Chemical Co., Ltd. is a joint venture of BP 85% and Zhuhai Fuhua Group 15% (BPZ) BPZ manufactures Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA). BPZ phase I, 350,000 tonne PTA plant investment, was completed successfully in Q1 2003. The phase I investment reaches US$360m. BPZ produces high quality PTA for the China market and uses BP’s advanced X technology in PTA industry. The plant is the most advanced of its kind in China.
A phase II project to expand PTA production to 900,000 tonnes more per annum using BP’s most advanced SOX production technology is under construction now and was put into production in Q4 2007 successfully. The phase II investment in BPZ is over US$300m.
BPZ’s HSE goals are “no accidents, no harm to people and no damage the environment”. There is a strong focus on developing staff HSE capability and competencies within the JV. BP’s HSE management practices and standards have been adopted by BPZ. The JV continues to develop a positive HSE culture, which focuses on promoting “every individual taking responsibility for safety at work”.
